Former Garissa Governor and 2027 gubernatorial candidate Ali Bunow Korane has called on religious leaders to take a frontline role in promoting peace, social cohesion and community stability amid growing concerns over insecurity in Garissa Town.

Amb. Korane urged religious institutions to work closely with security agencies, elders and residents in addressing local conflicts and curbing the rise of knife-wielding gangs that have recently terrorised sections of the town.

Amb. Korane said clerics wield significant influence within society and can help steer young people away from crime, radicalisation and other social vices.

“I call upon our religious leaders to take a leading role in fostering peace, social cohesion and community stability. Defeating crime and restoring order requires a collective effort involving religious leaders, community elders, security agencies, youth groups and every resident of Garissa,” he said.

The former governor expressed concern over reports of criminal gangs attacking residents and businesses. He warned that insecurity threatens economic growth and social harmony in the county.

He emphasized the need for community-driven solutions. He added that religious leaders are uniquely positioned to preach peaceful coexistence, reconciliation and respect for the rule of law.

The former county boss, who served as governor between 2017 and 2022, is seeking a political comeback after losing the seat to incumbent Governor Nathif Jama in the 2022 elections.

Recent political developments have seen Korane secure backing from sections of local elders and support within the ruling UDA party as he intensifies his campaigns. The race for the Garissa governorship is shaping up to be one of the most competitive contests in the region.

Besides Korane, several prominent figures have declared or are widely considered contenders for the seat, including Garissa Senator Abdul Haji, Water Resources Authority Chief Executive Officer Moulid Shurie, Kenya’s Consul-General in Arusha Abdi Dubat, former Lagdera MP Mohamed Shidiye and former Ijara MP Ibrahim Abaas.

Security, youth unemployment, infrastructure development and service delivery are likely to dominate campaign discussions as candidates seek to convince voters ahead of the 2027 polls.

Korane maintained that peace and security must remain a top priority regardless of political affiliations, saying sustainable development can only be achieved in a secure and united society. “As leaders, we have a responsibility to ensure our young people have hope, opportunities and a safe environment in which to thrive. Peace is the foundation upon which all development is built,” he said.

Residents and community stakeholders have welcomed calls for greater collaboration between religious leaders and security agencies, expressing hope that joint efforts will help restore calm and protect livelihoods in Garissa Town.
