Farmers from Garissa are seeking to be enjoined in a lawsuit filed by Umulkheir Harun against the state over perennial flooding along the River Tana.
The farmers, under the Garissa Farmers Network, said the recurring floods have destroyed crops, displaced families and worsened poverty across the region for years.
Speaking at the Garissa Farmers Training College, network chairman Mohamed Hassan described the legal action as long overdue, accusing the government of failing to compensate affected communities despite repeated appeals.
“Year in year out, thousands of acres of crops are swept away and livelihoods destroyed, yet no permanent solution has been provided,” Hassan said.
The lawsuit names the Energy CS, Energy PS, Kenya Electricity Generating Company, the Water Resources Authority and the Attorney General as respondents.
Farmers said they would mobilise support from Garissa Township, Fafi and Balambala subcounties to back the case, which seeks compensation and a long-term solution to the flooding crisis blamed on upstream dams along River Tana.
Harun said she filed the case to defend residents affected by repeated floods that have submerged homes, destroyed crops and swept away livestock.
