The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Garissa has engaged religious leaders in the county to promote peaceful and responsible political engagement as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
The meeting, led by SUPKEM Garissa Board Treasurer Sheikh Hassan Abdi Abdullahi, focused on the role of political, religious and community leaders in maintaining peace and social cohesion during the campaign period.
SUPKEM urged political leaders to focus their campaigns on policies, development priorities and their vision for the country and communities, while avoiding hate speech, tribal incitement, misinformation and other forms of divisive rhetoric.
The council also called on religious leaders and members of the public to promote tolerance, responsible citizenship and peaceful coexistence throughout the electoral period and beyond.
Among those who attended the engagement were Sheikh Ismail Ali, Principal of Madrasa Khadija, Sheikh Ismail Issack, a prominent religious leader in Garissa County, and other religious and community leaders.
SUPKEM said religious leaders have an important role to play in encouraging constructive dialogue and discouraging political rhetoric that could threaten peace and unity.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peaceful coexistence, responsible political participation and constructive engagement as Kenya moves towards the 2027 General Election.
During the upcoming general election, Garissa is estimated to be one of the most expensive and hotly contested political battle in the history of the administrative capital.
