Garissa Governor Nathif Jama Adam has held talks with members of the Garissa Farmers Network following widespread destruction caused by floods after the Tana River burst its banks during the recent rainy season.
The meeting, held in Township, focused on the losses suffered by farmers and measures needed to protect agricultural production from future flooding.
Farmers told the county leadership that the floods destroyed crops, damaged irrigation canals and rendered several farm access roads impassable, affecting transport and market access.
They also raised concerns over rising production costs and the growing challenges facing irrigation farming in parts of Garissa County.
Governor Nathif said his administration remains committed to supporting local farmers through infrastructure improvement and agricultural support programmes aimed at strengthening food production.
The governor pledged continued rehabilitation of farm access roads, provision of seeds and fertiliser, farmer training initiatives and support with irrigation equipment including generators.
Discussions during the meeting also explored the expansion and cement lining of water canals to improve irrigation efficiency and reduce water loss in farming zones along the Tana River.
Governor Nathif noted that strengthening agriculture remains critical to improving food security, creating household incomes and driving economic growth across Garissa County.
The talks come amid growing concerns among farmers over the recurring floods that continue to affect farming activities and livelihoods in the region.
