Maqabul Community in Garissa Declares Independent Political Path Ahead of 2027 Polls
The Maqabul community residing in Garissa has issued a firm statement asserting that its political loyalty lies squarely with Garissa County.
The community has declared that it will not be shifted to neighbouring Wajir, citing principles of dignity, autonomy and democratic choice.
Speaking in Garissa, 2027 Waberi Ward MCA aspirant Abdirashid Sheikh Abdullahi, popularly known as Farid, said the community had reached a clear and independent decision on its political future, free from external pressure or manipulation.
“The Maqabul community living in Garissa are not to be taken lightly. Our votes belong to Garissa and will not be transferred to Wajir,” Farid said.
“This is a matter of principle, dignity and the right of a community to choose its own political path without intimidation.”
Farid, who also contested the Waberi Ward MCA seat during the 2017 general election, said communities must be respected as independent political actors capable of making decisions based on their own interests and welfare.
His remarks come amid early political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.
The community held meetings in Garissa for discussions on having a consensus particularly in northern Kenya where regional, clan and cross-county dynamics often influence electoral debates.
Political analyst Said Ahmed noted that the declaration reflects a growing determination among communities in Garissa to assert local identity and priorities.
Mr. Ahmed said this signals resistance to attempts to redirect voting blocs for broader regional calculations.
Leaders have been urged to respect community choices, avoid divisive rhetoric and focus on inclusive, issue-driven politics.
