The government has warned communities in Bangale and Tana North sub-counties, Tana River County, against violating a 60-day peace agreement that requires the surrender of all illegal firearms.
Tana River County Commissioner Joseph Mwangi said relative calm has been restored since the agreement was reached, with progress made in the voluntary return of weapons. However, he cautioned that the government will use force if the deal is breached.
Speaking in Madogo after meeting elders and peace committee members from the Orma and Degodia communities, Mwangi said leaders from both sides had committed to upholding peace and urging their youth to lay down arms.
The county commissioner also directed security agencies to ensure serious crimes, including murder and rape, are prosecuted in court, noting that unresolved criminal cases have contributed to recurring conflict in the area.
