The impending elevation of Garissa Teaching and Referral Hospital to Level 6 status represents a healthcare revolution for millions of Kenyans in northern and eastern Kenya, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has declared.
The facility already acts as a critical lifeline for a sprawling population across Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Ukambani (Machakos and Kitui), Tana River, Lamu, Isiolo, Marsabit and Meru counties.
Patients from these areas frequently rely on the former Provincial General Hospital for referrals that would otherwise require arduous journeys to distant facilities in Nairobi or elsewhere.
Duale revealed that President William Ruto plans to meet local leaders on Monday to formally announce the upgrade.
This will enable substantial investments in modern infrastructure, recruitment of specialist doctors, procurement of advanced medical equipment, and expanded training programmes for healthcare workers.
For families in the arid and semi-arid lands of northern Kenya, the benefits will be life-changing. Reduced travel distances mean faster emergency responses, timely interventions for maternal and child health issues, and improved management of chronic conditions exacerbated by harsh climatic conditions.
Pastoralist communities, who often face mobility challenges, stand to gain immensely from having a national-level hospital within closer reach.
The elevation also addresses long-standing inequities in Kenya’s healthcare landscape.
It is designed to ensure residents in some of the country’s largest constituencies by landmass receive services commensurate with their needs.
As northern Kenya’s emerging medical hub, the hospital will enhance overall health system resilience, including better preparedness for disease outbreaks and emergency situations.
Training opportunities will empower local youth to pursue careers in medicine, fostering long-term human capital development in the region.
The move will alleviate the burden on existing facilities and improve health outcomes across demographics. The initiative is part of wider national efforts, including Taifa Care, to achieve universal health coverage.
Garissa Teaching and Referral Hospital first opened its doors in 1967 as a small city council facility and was transferred to the Ministry of Health in 1970.
Formerly known as Garissa Provincial General Hospital (or District Hospital), it has served as the primary healthcare institution in the region for decades.
It evolved into a Level 5 teaching and referral hospital with approximately 300 beds, playing a vital role in serving a wide catchment area that includes neighbouring counties and the Dadaab refugee population.
The facility has long handled complex medical cases, supported maternal and child health, and responded to regional emergencies, making its upcoming elevation to Level 6 national referral status a historic milestone in northern Kenya’s healthcare development.
