Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of intensifying a crackdown on the media, warning that press freedom in Kenya and across the East African region is under increasing threat.
Mr. Gachagua, adressing the press on Tuesday at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County claimed journalists and bloggers are facing growing intimidation ahead of the next General Election, urging greater protection for media practitioners.
He alleged there is a sustained campaign by state agencies and other governments in the region to suppress independent journalism, saying such actions undermine the constitutional guarantee of media freedom.
According to Gachagua, journalists reporting on corruption, abuse of the rule of law and the misuse of public resources are increasingly working under fear due to alleged threats and intimidation.
The former Deputy President cited the reported attempted abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kepkoech by armed men believed to be police officers in Nakuru as an example of what he described as the shrinking space for press freedom.
Gachagua also condemned the recent shutdown of six media outlets in Uganda, arguing that the incident reflects a broader pattern of media suppression across East Africa.
He called on journalists and media houses to remain steadfast in carrying out their constitutional mandate despite the challenges.
Mr. Gachagua urged the Kenya Editors Guild and international media rights organisations to intervene and support efforts to safeguard media freedom in Kenya and the wider region.
