President William Ruto has said the government’s increased investment in the sports sector is aimed at transforming it into a major economic industry that creates jobs, builds wealth and enhances Kenya’s global standing.
The head of state hosted officials and players from AFC Leopards Sports Club at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday.
President Ruto said the construction of 32 stadiums across the country will provide young people with opportunities to discover, nurture and showcase their talents regardless of where they live.
Ruto said the new stadiums are being designed as multi-purpose facilities that will go beyond hosting sporting events.
The facilities feature meeting rooms, studios, restaurants, gyms and other commercial spaces to support sports development while stimulating the creative economy and generating employment.
“We are scaling up investment in the sports sector to unlock immense economic potential, transforming it into an industry that creates jobs, builds wealth and strengthens Kenya’s global influence,” the President said.
He added that investing in sports is ultimately an investment in the country’s youth, saying such infrastructure will create pathways for talent development and entrepreneurship.
“There is no better investment than one that secures the future of our youth,” he said.
During the meeting, President Ruto congratulated AFC Leopards for finishing second in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League, describing the club’s performance as outstanding.
He wished the team continued success in the coming season and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the club as it works towards achieving greater success on the domestic and continental stage.
The government’s sports infrastructure programme forms part of broader efforts to promote youth empowerment, expand economic opportunities and position Kenya as a regional hub for sports and creative industries.
