Former Ijara Member of Parliament Sophia Abdinoor has described Wajir County’s hosting of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations as a historic milestone that reflects the transformative ideals of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.

The first and only woman elected as a legislator from Northern Kenya said she was deeply humbled to witness the national celebrations being held in the former North Eastern Province.

Sophia Abdi, who was among only two experts from Northern Kenya who contributed to the drafting of the 2010 Constitution, noted that the occasion carries both personal and national significance. She described the celebrations in Wajir as a powerful symbol of inclusion and national progress.

“As Wajir County proudly hosts this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, I am deeply humbled to reflect on my journey as one of only two experts from Northern Kenya who had the privilege of contributing to the drafting of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya,” she said.

Mrs. Sophia said she never imagined during the constitutional reform process that Madaraka Day would one day be commemorated in the region, noting that the development demonstrates how far the country has come in embracing equality and devolution.

The 2027 Ijara MP hopeful argued that Wajir hosting the national event is more than symbolic, saying it affirms that every region and every citizen matters in Kenya’s democratic journey.

According to the former legislator, the celebrations highlight the constitutional values of inclusivity, national unity, and equitable representation.

“Wajir hosting this historic celebration is not just symbolic; it is a clear affirmation that every region of Kenya matters, that every citizen belongs, and that the promise of our Constitution is steadily being realized,” she stated.

Mrs. Sophia Abdinoor further called on Kenyans to continue safeguarding the values enshrined in the Constitution, saying the journey toward a just and united nation remains ongoing.

This year’s Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir have drawn national attention to the region’s growing political and socio-economic profile. The event also underscores recognition of Northern Kenya’s increasing role in the country’s development.
