President William Ruto has commissioned the 132kV Kitui Sub-Station in Matinyani, in a power infrastructure project that includes a 66-kilometre transmission line connecting Garissa and Sultan Hamud.
The project is expected to strengthen electricity supply and improve reliability for more than 40,000 residents, while supporting economic activities across the areas served by the network.
For Garissa and the wider Northern Kenya region, reliable electricity is critical to expanding commercial enterprises, supporting irrigation, improving agricultural processing and creating an enabling environment for investment.
The infrastructure is also expected to facilitate the integration of clean energy into the national grid, supporting Kenya’s broader efforts to expand access to reliable and sustainable electricity.
Improved power reliability could benefit businesses, households and essential services by reducing supply disruptions and creating better conditions for economic growth.
The commissioning marks another step in the expansion of Kenya’s electricity transmission infrastructure, with the benefits depending on the network’s operational capacity and the communities connected to the supply.
