The government has allocated Sh6 billion over the past month to support drought mitigation efforts across more than nine affected counties, including Wajir, Garissa, and Tana River.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki urged Kenyans to remain calm amid worsening food insecurity.
DP Kindiki said national and county steering committees on drought response have been activated to coordinate efforts between the National and County Governments, development partners, humanitarian organizations, and the private sector.
He said the funds have been used to support food and non-food distribution, medical supplies, and water provision to communities in drought-hit areas.
An additional Sh4 billion will be allocated monthly to sustain the ongoing interventions, as the government appeals to development partners to continue supporting relief efforts.
According to the government, at least 2.1 million people are currently food insecure across the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs).
Between August and December last year, the government, in partnership with humanitarian and development partners, reached 1.4 million people through food assistance, cash transfers, water supply, medical support, and targeted nutrition interventions for children at risk of malnutrition.
DP Kindiki noted that beyond emergency response, the government is implementing long-term policies and strategies aimed at strengthening climate resilience, reducing vulnerability, and promoting sustainable development in drought-prone regions.
