Five illegal firearms have been voluntarily surrendered in Bangale Sub-County, Tana River County. The move comes as the government’s 60-day disarmament ultimatum continues to run.
The National Police Service said residents handed over the weapons on Tuesday. They include three AK-47 rifles, two G3 rifles, and 13 rounds of ammunition. The firearms were received by a multi-agency security team in Madogo.
Police described the surrender as a major boost to the ongoing disarmament exercise. They said it reflects growing cooperation between the community and security agencies.
The NPS praised local residents and leaders for responding positively to the government directive. Officers urged those still holding illegal firearms to surrender them during the amnesty period.
Security agencies say community cooperation remains key to restoring peace and stability in the Tana River.
