Garissa hailed as national leader in alternative justice systems

Garissa is the leading county across Kenya in the implementation of the Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) framework, Governor Nathif Jama has said.

The governor during the 4th Alternative Justice Systems Conference held at Embu University said the model has become one of the most active in the country since the establishment of the county’s AJS Suite last year.

The conference brought together leaders, judicial officers and justice sector stakeholders from across Kenya and beyond to review progress made in expanding access to justice through community-based dispute resolution mechanisms.

“I was particularly proud that Garissa County was recognized as the leading county in the country with regard to the implementation of the AJS framework,” he said.

Governor Nathif Jama said Garissa’s elders have successfully handled and guided the resolution of more than 100 cases through dialogue, mediation and consensus to ease the burden on formal courts while promoting peaceful coexistence.

The governor attributed the success of the initiative to the enduring value of traditional justice systems. Nathif underscored that, “they continue to play a critical role in fostering peace, reconciliation and social cohesion within communities.”

He also commended Chief Justice Martha Koome for her steadfast support of the Alternative Justice Systems programme.

The Garissa County boss said her commitment has been instrumental in advancing the framework across the country.

The AJS framework, championed by the Judiciary, seeks to integrate traditional and community-based mechanisms into Kenya’s justice system to enhance access to justice, particularly in underserved areas.

The 4th National Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) Conference in Embu brought together judges, legal experts, policymakers, scholars, county leaders and traditional elders.

The stakeholders explored how indigenous conflict resolution mechanisms can complement the formal justice system in delivering timely, accessible and culturally responsive justice.

Held under the stewardship of the Judiciary, the forum showcased the transformative role of Alternative Justice Systems in resolving disputes, fostering reconciliation and strengthening social harmony.

Delegates shared experiences from across the country, community-led mediation and use of consensus-building in helping to decongest courts while preserving long-standing traditions of dialogue and peaceful coexistence.

The conference also celebrated counties that have emerged as pioneers in implementing the AJS framework, demonstrating how traditional wisdom and modern governance can work hand in hand to build more inclusive and resilient communities.
