AU Holds Emergency Talks After US Announces End to Somalia Peacekeeping Support

Share:

The African Union (AU) has convened an emergency meeting after the United States announced it will end funding for key logistical support to African peacekeepers in Somalia by the close of 2026, raising concerns over the future of security operations against the militant group al-Shabaab.

The US-funded support provides essential services for approximately 12,000 African peacekeepers deployed under the African Union’s mission in Somalia, including food, fuel, transportation, medical services and operational equipment.

According to US officials, Washington has contributed nearly US$2 billion to African Union peace support missions in Somalia since 2007. The US said the decision reflects its view that Somalia’s federal government has not made sufficient progress in assuming primary responsibility for the country’s security.

The announcement has prompted urgent consultations among African Union officials, who are now exploring alternative sources of funding to sustain the mission beyond 2026.

Security analysts warn that a reduction in logistical support could significantly weaken peacekeeping operations at a time when Somali security forces continue to battle al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked militant group that controls parts of central and southern Somalia and regularly carries out deadly attacks.

The African peacekeeping force has played a critical role in supporting the Somali National Army through joint military operations, protecting strategic infrastructure and helping stabilise areas recovered from militant control.

AU officials have cautioned that without replacement funding, the mission could face operational challenges that may undermine recent security gains and create opportunities for al-Shabaab to regain territory and intensify attacks.

The funding uncertainty comes as Somalia continues efforts to strengthen its national security institutions and gradually assume greater responsibility for maintaining peace and stability following years of international support.

The African Union has not yet announced the outcome of its emergency meeting, but member states are expected to intensify diplomatic efforts to secure financial commitments from international partners and regional stakeholders to ensure continuity of the mission.
