The Cabinet has selected Galmagalla Health Centre in Fafi Sub-County for a major upgrade under the Government’s Ksh4.5 billion Mother and Child Lifeline Initiative.
The project is a partnership between the Government of Kenya and the Amsons Group that will establish 10 specialised Level 4 and Level 5 mother-and-child hospitals across 10 counties.
Galmagalla Health Centre is located in Dekaharia Ward, Fafi Sub-County, and is classified as a Level 3 Comprehensive Health Centre, regulated by the Ministry of Health and the Garissa County Department of Health.
Following the Cabinet’s proclamation on Tuesday, the health centre will be upgraded to a Level 4 hospital, providing specialised maternity, newborn, and paediatric services.
The facility currently provides essential primary healthcare services, including focused antenatal care, Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC), child immunisation, growth monitoring, integrated management of acute malnutrition, and multiple micronutrient supplementation services.
The upgrade of Galmagalla Health Centre to a Level 4 hospital is expected to significantly improve access to quality healthcare for residents of Fafi Sub-County and neighbouring areas.
The upgraded facility will offer an expanded range of medical services, including inpatient care, comprehensive maternity services, comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care, surgical procedures, diagnostic and laboratory services, and enhanced child healthcare.
The hospital will also have increased bed capacity, improved medical equipment, and a larger healthcare workforce, reducing referrals to distant facilities such as the Garissa County Referral Hospital.
The upgrade is expected to strengthen the region’s healthcare system, improve maternal and newborn health outcomes, and bring essential specialised healthcare services closer to underserved communities.
The initiative, led by President William Ruto, aims to transform the selected health centres into higher-level referral hospitals for maternal and child healthcare.
Once upgraded, Galmagalla Level 4 Hospital will provide residents of Fafi Sub-County and neighbouring communities in Garissa County with access to specialised maternity, newborn, and paediatric services.
The selected health facilities are expected to improve maternal and newborn healthcare by strengthening health infrastructure, equipping hospitals with modern medical technology, and enhancing the capacity of healthcare workers.
The programme also aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality while bringing quality specialised healthcare closer to underserved communities.
The investment is expected to accelerate access to quality healthcare and life-saving maternal and child health services.
It will also reduce the need for long-distance referrals to Garissa County’s administrative capital, improving timely access to critical medical care for thousands of residents.
