Thirty nurses at Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital have completed a three-day specialized training programme on nursing care plans aimed at improving patient management and strengthening healthcare delivery in Northeastern Kenya.

The training, facilitated by Let’s Talk Nursing, focused on nursing care planning, mentorship, emergency response, and professional development for frontline healthcare workers.

Chief Executive Officer Mahat Salah officially concluded the programme and lauded the nurses for their commitment to improving healthcare standards and embracing continuous learning in the profession.

Mr Salah said the hospital administration remains committed to strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers through continuous professional training and mentorship programmes.

He noted that nurses form the backbone of the healthcare system and play a critical role in patient recovery, emergency response, and overall service delivery within hospitals.

“Our goal as a hospital is to ensure that every patient who walks through our doors receives quality, professional, and compassionate care. This can only be achieved when our healthcare workers are equipped with modern skills, knowledge, and practical experience,” said Mr Salah.

He added that the hospital management would continue investing in staff development to improve healthcare outcomes and build a stronger referral system for Garissa County and the wider Northeastern region.

Mr Salah further said the training comes at a crucial time when healthcare facilities are facing increasing demand for specialized services. He underscored that skilled nurses are essential in improving patient safety and reducing medical complications.

The CEO also commended the partnership between the hospital and Let’s Talk Nursing, describing it as a major step toward promoting excellence in nursing practice and enhancing professionalism among healthcare workers.

Deputy CEO Hussein Basheey, who joined the hospital chief during the closing ceremony, urged the participants to apply the skills acquired during the training to improve patient care and strengthen healthcare services at the facility.

Mr Basheey said the hospital administration would continue supporting initiatives that empower healthcare workers and enhance service delivery across departments.

Lead facilitator Leonard Otieno said the programme is part of a wider national campaign aimed at promoting nursing excellence and supporting healthcare workers through continuous professional development.

He said the initiative seeks to expand beyond the referral hospital to sub-county health facilities across Garissa and eventually to other counties in Northeastern Kenya.

Mr Yunis Dekow, Chief of Communications at Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital, announced plans to roll out mentorship programmes, induction courses for newly recruited nurses, and emergency response training.

He said the programmes would include Basic Life Support and Neonatal Cardiac Life Support, among other vital areas aimed at delivering quality healthcare.

Dekow said the initiatives are in line with the manifesto of Governor Nathif Jama for the Health Department, which is tasked with ensuring that the people of Garissa have access to quality, innovative, cost-friendly, and dignified health services that improve the wellbeing of the population.

“To improve the overall livelihoods of citizens, Garissa County aims to provide an efficient, integrated, and high-quality affordable healthcare system,” he said.

He added that the health sector remains one of the central pillars of equity and socio-economic development in Garissa County under Governor Nathif Jama’s administration.
