The Jubaland Armed Forces and Serious Crimes Court has handed down varying sentences against three defendants accused of collaborating with Al-Shabaab militants.
In its rulings, the court sentenced Nuur Yuusuf Sanay to two years in military prison and ordered him to return a government-issued firearm.
A second defendant, Abdirashid Ali Hassan, also known as Abdiyow, was sentenced to three years in military prison.
The third defendant, Abdihakim Nuur Hassan, was sentenced to one year of supervision and fined $1,000. The court further ordered that he be returned to Dhoobley district in Somalia’s Lower Juba region.
The sentences reflect the court’s handling of cases involving alleged links to Al-Shabaab, which the Somali government refers to as Khawaarij.
Details regarding the dates of the proceedings and whether the defendants intend to appeal the rulings were not immediately available.
