Adan Abdulla Mohammed is Kenya’s newly appointed Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), taking over leadership of the country’s tax collection agency at a time of growing economic and fiscal pressure.
His appointment was announced in a Special Issue of the Kenya Gazette dated May 18, 2026, by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi. He succeeds Humphrey Wattanga and will serve a three-year term.
Mohammed is a seasoned banker, economist and public administrator with decades of experience in both the private and public sectors.
Before joining government, he built a successful career in banking through Barclays Bank, where he rose to become Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Kenya. He also served as Managing Director for Barclays East and West Africa and later Chief Administrative Officer for Barclays Africa, overseeing operations across ten African countries.
His transition into government saw him appointed Cabinet Secretary for Industrialization and Trade during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration. In that role, he was involved in promoting industrial growth, trade expansion and investment policies.
He later served as Cabinet Secretary for East African Community and Regional Development, where he focused on regional integration and cross-border economic cooperation.
Most recently, Mohammed has been serving as Chief of Strategy Execution at State House under President William Ruto’s administration, helping coordinate implementation of key government programmes and policies.
Known for his strong background in finance, trade and policy management, Mohammed now takes over KRA as the government intensifies efforts to increase revenue collection, widen the tax base and strengthen economic reforms.
His appointment places him at the centre of Kenya’s economic management at a time when the country faces rising public debt, increased taxation debates and pressure to improve domestic revenue mobilisation.
