Eight suspects have been arrested in connection with an alleged M-Pesa SIM swap fraud in which more than Sh1.2 million was stolen from a customer in Marsabit Town.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects posed as customers at an M-Pesa agent before deceiving the shop operator and executing a fraudulent SIM swap.
Investigators say the group allegedly used the illegally acquired SIM card to gain access to the victim’s mobile money account, enabling unauthorized transactions amounting to approximately Sh1.2 million.
The eight suspects were arrested following investigations by detectives, who are continuing to probe the incident to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fraud and identify any additional accomplices.
The DCI urged M-Pesa agents and members of the public to remain vigilant against SIM swap scams, warning that fraudsters often use deception to gain access to customers’ mobile money accounts.
The suspects will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
