Garissa Farmers Network E-Commerce System is the latest step toward digital livestock and agricultural transformation.
The new platform aims to improve market access for farmers and pastoralists across the county.
Garissa Governor Nathif Jama Adam, Garissa Township MP, Rtd. Maj. Dekow Mohamed Barrow, county leaders, development partners, and other stakeholders attended the official launch.
The rollout of the system is expected to address long-standing challenges in the local agricultural sector.
Developed by EmpowerWithIT, the e-commerce platform is designed to tackle key barriers faced by producers in Garissa, including limited access to markets, low price transparency, and fragmented trade networks.
Through a Farm to Market approach, the system digitally connects farmers and pastoralists directly to buyers, helping to streamline trade, strengthen agricultural supply chains, and improve incomes at the grassroots.
Mr. Abdi Bulle Said, Founder and Executive Director of EmpowerWithIT, said the platform represents more than a technological solution, describing it as a pathway to inclusive economic growth.
He noted that by leveraging digital tools, local producers can participate more competitively in wider markets while retaining greater value for their products.
Beyond the Garissa Farmers Network, EmpowerWithIT expressed readiness to support other cooperatives and businesses in designing and deploying tailored digital systems that unlock new market opportunities.
The organization also called on the County Government, development partners, and private sector actors to collaborate in scaling the platform.
A community tech organisation in Garissa is leading a push to expand digital training for young people in northern Kenya.
EmpowerwithIT, a local non-profit, says the region is at risk of being locked out of Kenya’s digital economy without urgent investment.
The group was founded to address the lack of digital tools, training and infrastructure in the northern region. It says many young people want to pursue tech careers but face major barriers, including poverty and limited access to computers.
The organisation plans to expand its mentorship programmes and increase scholarships for low-income learners.
Stakeholders at the event emphasized that the initiative positions Garissa as a potential model for digital agricultural transformation in Northern Kenya, aligning technology with local livelihoods to build resilient and inclusive economies.
The launch underscores growing momentum within the county to harness innovation as a driver of sustainable agriculture and local economic development.
