KES 2.5 Million Worth of Cannabis Seized from Tanzania-Bound Bus at Namanga

Share:

Security agencies have seized 84 kilograms of cannabis valued at approximately KES 2.52 million from a Tanzania-registered passenger bus at the Namanga border post.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the interception was carried out during a routine inspection involving officers from the Anti-Narcotic Unit (ANU), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), and the Police Dog Unit.

Sniffer dogs detected suspicious packages concealed inside the bus’s fuel chamber, prompting a detailed search that led to the recovery of four tightly wrapped bundles containing 84 packets of cannabis.

The bus driver, 37, and the conductor, 25—both Tanzanian nationals—were arrested at the scene. Police confirmed that the suspects are being held pending completion of investigations and arraignment in court.

Authorities have detained the bus and the recovered narcotics as exhibits.

The DCI said the seizure highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb cross-border drug trafficking through coordinated, intelligence-led operations.
