Garissa 2027 Gubernatorial Race Takes Shape

The race for the 2027 Garissa gubernatorial seat is steadily taking shape, with several high-profile leaders emerging as top contenders for the county’s top office.

Among those in the spotlight is Ambassador Mohamed Shidiye, a seasoned diplomat and lawmaker whose name has gained traction in recent months. Supporters point to his extensive experience in public service and diplomacy as key assets for county leadership.

Also considered a strong contender is former Garissa Governor Ambassador Ali Korane, who is eyeing a return to county leadership. His allies cite his previous experience at the helm of the county and familiarity with devolved governance structures.

Former Principal Secretary Amb. Abdiqani Dubat has also emerged as a notable figure in the race. Dubat brings with him vast experience in national government, policy formulation, and public administration, attributes his supporters believe position him well to steer Garissa’s development agenda.

Garissa Senator Abdulkadir Mohamed Haji who is known for his engagement in governance and development matters within the county has gained attention across the county and as far up the house on the hill to the head of state President William Ruto.

Mohamed Moulid Shurie is also among those expected to vie for the seat, adding to the growing list of aspirants. He is the Chief Executive Officer of the Water Resources Authority and is a hydrogeologist by profession.

Another leading contender is Ahmed Ibrahim Abass popularly known as Bishar Ijara, the Chairperson of the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC).

He served as Ijara member of parliament and Garissa County Speaker.

Mr. Said Abdi, a Garissa based political observer, said they are expecting the contest for Garissa’s gubernatorial seat to intensify.

The aspirants will unveil their policy positions on development, agriculture, land, service delivery, and economic empowerment.

For now, Garissa residents continue to closely monitor the evolving political landscape as the race gradually gathers momentum.
