Wajir Cabinet approves plan to rename stadium after Ahmed Khalif

Wajir County’s Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename Wajir Stadium as Ahmed Khalif Stadium, honouring the late Ahmed Khalif for his public service and contribution to the county’s development.

The decision was made during a meeting of the County Executive Committee chaired by Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, which discussed key policy and governance matters aimed at improving service delivery and advancing the county’s development agenda.

Governor Abdullahi said the Cabinet considered a memorandum seeking to rename the stadium in recognition of Ahmed Khalif’s leadership and lasting legacy in Wajir.

The Cabinet resolved to forward the proposal to the Wajir County Assembly for debate and approval in accordance with the Constitution and the relevant legal framework.

The governor said the proposal follows a directive issued by President William Ruto during the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir, where the Head of State announced that the county’s main stadium would be named after the late leader.

“Every generation has a responsibility to preserve the legacy of those who came before it,” Abdullahi said.

“As a county, we will continue to honour individuals whose service has left a lasting mark on Wajir while ensuring every decision follows the law and serves the public interest.”

If approved by the County Assembly, the facility will officially be renamed Ahmed Khalif Stadium.

The county government said the move is intended to recognise the late Ahmed Khalif’s contribution to Wajir’s growth while preserving the legacy of leaders who have played a significant role in the county’s history.
