Garissa County has developed its first Trade and Industrialisation Policy aimed at attracting investors, strengthening local enterprises and creating employment opportunities.
The policy, spearheaded by the County Ministry of Trade, Investment and Enterprise Development, seeks to guide the operationalisation of the County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP), promote value addition and improve market access for local businesses.
During a stakeholder workshop in Dadaab, participants explored strategies to encourage local entrepreneurs to reinvest in the county and expand business opportunities for refugee-led enterprises beyond the camps.
The policy is also expected to promote the socio-economic integration of refugees under the national Shirika Plan while strengthening trade links between refugee businesses, host communities and wider county markets.
The draft policy will undergo further consultation and validation involving Members of the County Assembly and business representatives before being presented to Governor Nathif Jama for consideration.
The process is supported by the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office, the Danish Refugee Council and Prosper Global.
