Journalist and political aspirant Deqsan Abdi Hassan has withdrawn her bid for the Wajir County Women Representative seat in the 2027 General Election following a consultative meeting with elders at Ali Dumal.
The decision came after elders appealed to Deqsan to reconsider her political ambitions and respect their verdict, taking into account prevailing circumstances and other factors surrounding her candidature.
Deqsan acknowledged that stepping aside had not been an easy decision but maintained that family and community considerations had influenced her choice.
“They said I am young and have time. Stepping aside was not easy, but family comes first,” she said, expressing appreciation to her supporters for standing by her political ambitions.
Deqsan had positioned herself as one of the emerging young aspirants seeking to represent Wajir women in the National Assembly, with an agenda centred on youth empowerment, women’s economic inclusion, accountability and public participation.
Her proposed agenda included expanding access to skills development, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for young people, supporting women-led enterprises and strengthening women’s participation in leadership and public decision-making.

Drawing on her professional background in journalism, she had also pledged to promote accountability, transparency and stronger engagement between citizens and public institutions.
Following her withdrawal, Deqsan indicated that her political ambitions remained alive, suggesting that she could pursue another elective position in the future.
“To my supporters, this is not the end of our journey. Allah’s plan is the best, and insha’Allah, next time we will be back,” she said, signalling a possible return to elective politics in 2032.
