Garissa County Boda Boda Chairman Hussein Haji Dekow has appealed to residents to participate in voluntary blood donation ahead of World Blood Donor Day on Sunday.

Hussein Dekow said the simple act can save lives and strengthen healthcare services in the county.

The leader of Garissa County bodada operators urged members of the public, particularly young people and boda boda operators, to support local blood collection efforts and help maintain adequate supplies for patients in need.

“Donating blood is an act of humanity and solidarity. A single donation can make the difference between life and death for accident victims, mothers facing complications during childbirth, and patients undergoing surgery,” the veteran rider said.

Hussein Dekow said Kenya continues to face periodic shortages of blood, with health facilities relying on voluntary donors to meet the needs of emergency cases and routine medical procedures.

“In Garissa County, healthcare providers have repeatedly called for increased donations to ensure a stable supply for hospitals and health centres.”

Hussein Dekow encouraged eligible residents to become regular donors, noting that sustained community participation is essential to building a reliable blood reserve and improving emergency preparedness.

World Blood Donor Day, commemorated annually on 14 June, seeks to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products.

He reiterated the need to recognise the contribution of voluntary, unpaid blood donors in saving lives and supporting resilient health systems.
