Elders from several constituencies of Garissa County have endorsed Ambassador Mohamed Shidiye as the next governor, following a meeting in Garissa town.

Elders, representing constituencies including Dadaab, and Lagdera, paid a courtesy visit to Shidiye’s residence.

They discussed issues of mutual respect and thanksgiving for the discussions held the previous day.

“We have come together as custodians of our communities to support a leader who can unite Garissa and address the county’s pressing challenges,” said Mzee Abdi Aden.

“Ambassador Shidiye has shown commitment to peace, development, and inclusivity.”

Sheikh Warsame said the endorsement reflects the wishes of many who missed attending the meeting.

“We believe Ambassador Shidiye’s leadership will strengthen unity and ensure the voices of all residents are heard in county decision-making.”

Amb. Shidiye is among top contenders for the 2027 Garissa Gubernatorial seat. Others include Amb. Ali Korane, Abdulkadir Mohamed Haji, Mohamed Moulid Shurie and Ahmed Ibrahim Abass, popularly known as Bishar Ijara.

“We have observed his dedication and diplomacy over the years. He understands the county’s needs, and we trust he will prioritise development and fairness for every Garissan,” he added.

Amb. Mohamed Shidiye expressed gratitude for the elders’ backing. He said their endorsement strengthens his resolve to serve all Garissa residents with dedication and integrity.

“I will work with every community to ensure our county grows together, peacefully and prosperously.”

The endorsement comes ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections and signals growing momentum for Shidiye’s campaign, with elders positioning themselves as influential advocates of his leadership.

Elders continue to play a decisive role in Garissa politics, where clan dynamics and community consensus often shape electoral outcomes. Their backing can consolidate votes, resolve inter-clan tensions, and signal unity across diverse communities, giving a candidate both legitimacy and influence.
