Former comedian turned activist Eric Omondi has been released on a personal bond of Ksh100,000 following his arrest over his involvement in recent fuel protests in Nairobi.
Omondi was freed on Monday after spending the weekend in custody following his arrest at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Friday.
According to the charge sheet presented in court, Omondi is accused of offloading 180 yellow jerrycans in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), an act prosecutors say obstructed the free flow of traffic.
The incident is linked to demonstrations against rising fuel prices and the high cost of living, where Omondi has been at the forefront of mobilizing public action and drawing attention to economic hardships faced by Kenyans.
The prosecution argued that the activist’s actions caused disruption within the city centre, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians.
Omondi, who has in recent years transitioned from comedy into social activism, has frequently staged protests and public demonstrations aimed at pressuring the government to address issues affecting ordinary citizens.
