ODM Moves to Consolidate Support in North Eastern Ahead of 2027 Elections

Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi says ODM will support President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid while consolidating its grassroots support in Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties and fielding its own candidates for other elective positions.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders have declared their support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027 while affirming that the party will independently contest other elective positions across the country.

Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who serves as ODM’s Organising Secretary-General, reaffirmed the party’s association with the government, dismissing suggestions that it was not aligned with the current administration.

“I want to reiterate that ODM is affiliated with the government, and nobody should tell you otherwise,” Abdullahi said.

He assured aspirants seeking ODM tickets that the party would conduct free and fair nominations as competition for elective positions intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“Nobody should fear the nomination process or worry that they may be disadvantaged because the exercise is being conducted by ODM. We will ensure that the nominations are free and fair,” he said.

Abdullahi criticised members who had left the party following the death of its former leader, Raila Odinga, saying those who remained had a responsibility to protect his political legacy.

“Those of us who joined ODM out of conviction remain in the party. Those who have left are people who were in ODM out of convenience,” he said.

The governor also reaffirmed ODM’s commitment to consolidating its political support in North Eastern Kenya, describing the region as a strong pillar of the party.

Abdullahi said ODM was working to strengthen its presence across Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties following consultations with party leaders, delegates and grassroots supporters.

“The North Eastern region remains a strong pillar of ODM,” he said, adding that the party was committed to consolidating its support, strengthening alliances and building unity ahead of the next political chapter.

The remarks signal ODM’s intention to maintain its association with the government while strengthening its regional structures and fielding candidates on its own ticket for other elective positions.

The party faces the challenge of managing competition for nominations, strengthening grassroots mobilisation and maintaining unity among members and aspirants as the 2027 General Election approaches.
