Level 6 facilities lead Kenya’s final HMIS transition push

Share:

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale says national Level 6 hospitals are at the centre of Kenya’s final push to complete the transition to the Health Management Information System (HMIS), after the Government extended the migration deadline by one month.

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) are expected to complete their transition by the end of next week, while all remaining Level 6 facilities are expected to be fully migrated by October 30, 2026.

In a press statement issued Thursday, CS Duale said the transition has recorded significant progress across public, faith-based and private health facilities as Kenya moves towards a standardised, interoperable and paperless health information system.

The Ministry of Health said all 6,427 public Level 2–4 health facilities have successfully transitioned to HMIS.

At Level 5, four public facilities have completed the migration, while 23 others are at various stages of implementation. The Ministry expects all public Level 5 facilities to complete the process by October 30.

The Government is also supporting 518 contracted faith-based facilities with installation and migration. So far, 38 have completed the transition.

28 private HMIS platforms certified

The Digital Health Agency (DHA) has so far certified 28 existing HMIS platforms operated by private health facilities in line with the Digital Health Act.

The certification is aimed at promoting standardisation and interoperability while strengthening the quality and security of health data.

The DHA will conduct Rapid Results Initiatives throughout October to provide technical support to private facilities and accelerate migration.

The Ministry has assured Kenyans that the transition will not interrupt access to healthcare.

“No patient will be denied access to healthcare services because a facility has not yet fully transitioned to HMIS,” the Ministry said.

Facilities yet to complete the migration have been urged to accelerate the process and seek technical assistance from the DHA where necessary.

The Ministry will also meet health sector associations on Friday, October 2, at 8am, to agree on facility-by-facility transition plans, including outstanding requirements and completion timelines.
