New Garissa-Tana Bridge to Open in Four Months

Share:

Residents of Garissa County and the wider North Eastern region will soon benefit from improved transport after officials confirmed that the KSh 1.7 billion Tana Bridge will be completed and commissioned within the next four months.

North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno said the 150-metre bridge, which crosses the Tana River, faced minor delays that prompted the contractor to seek an extension. The project had initially been expected to be completed by next week.

“This is a game changer and a very modern bridge that will greatly improve connectivity and safety in the region,” Otieno said after inspecting the project.

Once completed, the new bridge will handle vehicular traffic, while the existing 43-year-old bridge will be retained for pedestrians, boda boda riders, and livestock. Engineers have given the new structure a lifespan of 100 years.

Mr. Otieno also noted progress on other infrastructure projects, including the LAPSSET Corridor, where 68 kilometres of road have already been paved, a development expected to boost trade and regional integration.
