Wajir Deputy Governor Ahmed Muhumed Aato has said the rollout of new administrative units will improve security coordination, speed up emergency responses, and enhance the delivery of healthcare, education, livestock support, and development resources.
Mr. Ahmed Aato emphasised that the move is essential to bring governance closer to remote communities that have long been hindered by vast distances and marginalisation.
The Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration (Ref. No. MOINA/SEC.1/1, dated 8 June 2026) has authorised the activation of several new locations and sub-locations across Garissa and Wajir counties.
Among the approved units are Ajof in Habaswein, Sukela Location and Sub-location in Wajir South, and Kulmis Sub-location in Sabuli. Others include Harajabs and Loo-Dubay in Garissa’s Bura East; Garab Biski in Wajir West; Madina in Wajir East; Detachdera in Buna; Kabole in Korondille; and Abaqmadobe in Diff.
Mr Aato emphasised the practical importance of the new structures for everyday service delivery in one of Kenya’s most challenging environments.
“The administration units are vital in service delivery,” he said, singling out the need to fully operationalise Ajof Location, Sukela Location and Sub-location, and Kulmis Sub-location.
Wajir South, Kenya’s second-largest constituency by landmass, covers vast tracts of arid terrain where sparse populations and immense distances have historically made access to government services difficult.
The Deputy Governor said there are still many ungoverned areas and settlements in the expansive Wajir South that require to be formalised as administrative units.
The operationalisation process includes the deployment of administrative officers, the setting up of local offices, and the full integration of these units into county and national governance systems.
“The changes will help cut bureaucratic delays and allow more targeted interventions in a region where vast open spaces have often hindered effective public administration,” said the Deputy Governor.
