President Ruto Welcomes $900 Million Boost for Africa’s Clean Cooking Agenda

President William Ruto says the government is accelerating investment and strengthening partnerships to ensure universal access to clean cooking across Africa.

“It is regrettable that nearly one billion people in Africa still rely on traditional fuels that threaten public health, education, and the environment,” President Ruto said.

He reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to clean energy, with the goal of achieving universal access to clean cooking by 2028.

President Ruto said he has made clean cooking a national development priority through the Kenya National Cooking Transition Strategy.

“Kenya and the continent cannot afford to slow down on this critical intervention with only five years remaining to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.

The Head of State spoke during the Virtual High-Level Event on Keeping Clean Cooking High on Africa’s Development Agenda on Thursday.

He welcomed the announcement of $900 million in new commitments towards advancing the clean cooking agenda.

President Ruto also said the launch of the Clean Cooking Security Programme is a critical step towards accelerating the transition to clean cooking across the continent.

The event was originally planned as the Second Africa Clean Cooking Summit, which was to be hosted in Nairobi.
