Nurses at Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital are undergoing a three-day specialized training on nursing care plans aimed at improving patient management and strengthening healthcare delivery across the region.
The training, facilitated by Let’s Talk Nursing, began on Monday following an invitation by Garissa County health leadership.
The programme seeks to equip nurses with critical skills in nursing care planning, mentorship, emergency care, and professional development.
Speaking during the session, lead facilitator Leonard Otieno said the initiative is part of a wider national campaign to promote nursing excellence and empower healthcare workers with practical knowledge and skills.
He noted that nursing care plans remain one of the most important tools in patient management and that many nurses still require further training and support in effectively applying them in healthcare settings.
The training comes days after the celebration of International Nurses Day, whose theme focused on empowering nurses to save lives through knowledge and professional development.
Mr Otieno emphasized the importance of strengthening nursing capacity in Northeastern Kenya.
He noted that Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital serves as the region’s main referral facility and faces unique healthcare challenges.
He added that the programme aims to expand beyond the referral hospital to sub-county facilities across Garissa and eventually other parts of the North Eastern region.
“We are committed to reaching nurses across the country and empowering them with skills that improve patient care and professional growth,” he said.
Let’s Talk Nursing also confirmed plans to introduce mentorship programmes, induction courses for newly employed nurses, and emergency response training such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Cardiac Life Support (NCLS).
Acting Director of Hospital Administration M.H. Bullow said empowering nurses with updated knowledge and skills would improve patient care, referral systems, and overall healthcare outcomes in the region.
Mr. Bullow said the programme strengthens nursing practice through practical, evidence-based clinical training and mentorship.
