Kismayo Traders Displacement Sparks Concern from Somali Equality Party

Share:

The Somali Equality Party has issued a formal statement expressing deep concern over the reported displacement of long-standing small-scale traders from Farjano Market in Kismayo, where their business premises have allegedly been sold to other traders, threatening the livelihoods of numerous families and raising fears of increased social tensions in the area.

Farjano Market serves as a key commercial hub for small traders in Kismayo, the economic centre of Jubaland State in southern Somalia. The reported evictions have drawn attention to broader questions surrounding commercial rights, land use, and the protection of small businesses in the region.

In its statement, the party warned that the displacements, if confirmed, would have a direct and devastating impact on families who depend on these businesses for their daily income.

It noted that such actions could push traders into poverty while creating unnecessary security challenges and social tensions.

“These traders have the right to have their constitutional and commercial rights respected, and to be treated with fairness, justice, and equal opportunity,” the statement read.

The party called on relevant authorities to respond transparently to the allegations and ensure no citizen is subjected to injustice or deprived of property through unlawful means.

It also urged traditional elders, religious leaders, intellectuals, and the wider Jubaland community to stand in solidarity with the affected traders.

The Somali Equality Party reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice, the protection of citizens’ rights, and the promotion of free and fair commerce in Jubaland.

The statement was signed by H.E. Ahmed Safi, Jubaland Presidential Candidate and Chairman of the Somali Sime Party.
