Garissa Referral Hospital Signs Cancer Care Deal with Egypt’s Shefa Al-Orman

Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital has signed a memorandum of understanding with Shefa Al-Orman Cancer Hospitals in Luxor, Egypt, to expand specialist oncology services for patients in Garissa and the wider North Eastern region.

A multidisciplinary team from the Garissa facility, led by Chief Executive Officer Mahat Sheikh Salah, travelled to Luxor for an international oncology workshop, a benchmarking visit and talks on long-term cooperation.

The visit focused on sharing clinical experience and mapping practical ways to strengthen diagnosis, treatment and referral pathways.

The partnership covers comprehensive cancer care, including cross-border patient referrals, advanced diagnostics and pathology, radiotherapy, medical and surgical oncology, multidisciplinary tumour boards, tele-oncology and professional training.

The two institutions also agreed to explore joint work on research, cancer prevention and capacity building.

Shefa Al-Orman operates specialised adult and paediatric cancer hospitals in Luxor and provides diagnosis and treatment services including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and supportive care.

Mr Salah said the agreement gives Garissa clinicians access to a dedicated oncology centre and a framework for continued professional exchange.

“The agreement will help explore approaches that could strengthen cancer diagnosis, treatment and referral services in Garissa and the wider region,” he said.

He added that the partnership would open opportunities for training, research and innovation, with both hospitals working towards closer links in prevention and patient care.

The deal comes as hospitals across Africa look to close specialist cancer gaps through knowledge exchange, technology and staff development.

Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital already serves neighbouring counties including Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Tana River and Kitui, and remains a key referral point for the Dadaab refugee complex.

It has in recent years invested in a Regional Cancer Centre serving patients from across Northern Kenya.

The Luxor partnership is intended to complement those local investments by linking Garissa clinicians to advanced diagnostics, radiotherapy expertise and structured tumour-board practice that many patients in the region currently travel long distances to obtain.
