Garissa’s medical fraternity is mourning the death of former Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon Dr. Peter Otieno Ochung’o, who previously served at Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital before taking up his latest role at Makueni County Referral Hospital.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) announced his passing in a condolence statement sent to newsrooms describing his death as a great loss to the medical profession.
At the time of his death, Dr. Ochung’o was serving as the Head of the Department of ENT Surgery at Makueni County Referral Hospital and was an active member of the KMPDU Makueni Branch.
During his time in Garissa, Dr. Ochung’o earned the respect of colleagues, patients and the wider community for his dedication, professionalism and commitment to improving specialised ENT services.
Many residents remember him as a compassionate surgeon who worked tirelessly to provide quality care to patients from Garissa and neighbouring counties.
KMPDU described Dr. Ochung’o as a respected ENT surgeon whose professionalism, leadership and dedication to public service reflected the highest standards of medical practice.
“His passing is a profound loss to his family, colleagues, the people of Makueni County, and the medical fraternity,” the union said.
KMPDU extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and all those mourning his death, saying it stands in solidarity with them during this difficult period.
The news has also saddened many healthcare workers in Garissa, where Dr. Ochung’o made a lasting impact through his service and mentorship before relocating to Makueni.
His death marks the loss of a dedicated specialist whose contribution to healthcare in Garissa and Kenya will be remembered for years to come.
