Garissa Member of Parliament Rtd. Maj. Dekow Barrow reaffirmed his commitment to supporting farmers and strengthening agricultural value chains during the Kuza Jamii II Farmers’ Field Day held in Garissa on Saturday.
Rtd. Maj. Barrow said empowering farmers through market access, knowledge sharing, and climate-smart practices is key to improving livelihoods and building long-term resilience in arid and semi-arid regions.
“The farmer must be supported from production to market. When we strengthen value chains, we strengthen livelihoods and food security for our communities,” Barrow said.
The Farmers’ Field Day, held under the theme “Farm to Market: Creating Stronger Agricultural Supply Chains,” brought together farmers, cooperatives, and agribusiness stakeholders from across Garissa County to showcase products, exchange ideas, and build market linkages.
Rtd. .Maj. Barrow noted that platforms such as the Kuza Jamii II initiative play a critical role in connecting agriculture with health, nutrition, and social protection, especially for vulnerable households affected by climate shocks.
He said the forum provided an opportunity for farmers and cooperatives to learn best practices in livestock management, agribusiness development, and cooperative growth, while also opening pathways to reliable markets.
Several local cooperatives, including the Dadaab Safi Women Milk Cooperative Society, Dadaab Mercy Cooperative Society, and the Garissa Camel Milk SACCO, exhibited their products and shared lessons on value addition and cooperative-led development.
The event was organized in partnership with the Kuza Jamii Project, which supports shock-responsive systems that integrate agriculture, healthcare, and social protection to improve nutrition outcomes and household resilience.
Rtd. Maj. Barrow called for continued collaboration between national and county governments, development partners, and the private sector to ensure farmers in Garissa benefit from sustainable and inclusive agricultural growth.
