Habaswein Ward MCA candidate Abdikadir Ali Osman has urged families across the ward to exercise heightened caution as rains continue across Wajir County and other parts of northern Kenya.
Abdikadir called on parents, guardians and community leaders to remain vigilant, particularly in areas vulnerable to flash floods, rising water levels and other hazards associated with heavy rainfall.
“I urge every family in Habaswein Ward to take these rains seriously. Let us protect our children, our homes and our livestock, and avoid taking unnecessary risks during this period,” Abdikadir said.
He particularly urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on children during and after heavy rainfall, warning them against playing near flooded areas, seasonal rivers, water channels, dams and stagnant pools.
“Our children are especially vulnerable during heavy rains. Parents and guardians should ensure that children stay away from flooded areas and other dangerous water points. What may appear to be shallow water can become dangerous very quickly,” he cautioned.
Abdikadir also advised residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways on foot, by motorcycle or in vehicles, noting that floodwaters can conceal deep channels, damaged roads and other hazards.
He encouraged residents to pay attention to weather and public safety alerts and to move to safer ground early if their homes or neighbourhoods become threatened by rising water.
The MCA candidate further urged families to take precautions against health risks that may follow heavy rains, including contaminated drinking water, stagnant water and increased exposure to waterborne and mosquito-borne diseases.
He called on elders, religious leaders, teachers and other community leaders to reinforce safety messages and help ensure that children and vulnerable residents are protected.
“At this time, looking after one another is a responsibility we all share. Let us remain vigilant, support families in vulnerable areas and act early whenever there is a threat to life or property,” Abdikadir said.
Abdikadir appealed to residents of Habaswein Ward to remain calm but prepared throughout the rainy period, emphasizing the importance of early action, community cooperation and responsible behaviour in reducing avoidable risks.
He also encouraged residents to share verified safety information with neighbours and to seek assistance from the relevant authorities whenever flooding or other emergencies threaten their communities.
