Nominated Member of Parliament Umulkheir Harun has called for urgent measures to strengthen disaster preparedness and fire response in major markets after visiting Dagaxley in Dadaab, where traders were affected by a recent fire.
Harun met members of the business community whose livelihoods were disrupted by the blaze, noting that traders contribute to county revenue but continue to operate without a stationed firefighting team capable of responding to emergencies.
She said Dagaxley serves both refugees and a vibrant host community, with businesses playing a critical role in supporting local livelihoods.
Harun called for every major market in the county to have a functional fire station, proper access roads to facilitate emergency response and a clear disaster preparedness plan.
She said the community, market leaders and security teams had agreed to work together on a coordinated plan to facilitate reconstruction and help affected households restore their sources of income as quickly as possible.
Harun also thanked the Ministry of Special Programmes for supporting families affected by the fire through the provision of dry food supplies.
“Our people deserve safety, dignity and a county government that responds when disaster strikes,” she said.
