Omar Mohamed Sheikh Declares Bid for Wajir Governor in 2027 Race

Share:

Governance and development consultant Omar Mohamed Sheikh has declared his intention to contest the Wajir gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, stating he is prepared to offer new leadership after years of public service and preparation.

Mr. Omar said his ambition to lead Wajir County dates back to 2012, when he was endorsed by the Rero Mohamud family of the larger Degodia but stepped aside in favour of the then gubernatorial candidate, Ahmed Abdullahi, to promote unity within the wider Mantan family.

He noted that Governor Ahmed Abdullahi is expected to complete his second and final constitutional term in 2027, opening the door for new leadership in the county.

Omar said he is returning to seek the county’s top seat armed with extensive academic and professional credentials.

He holds a Master of Science in Agriculture and Rural Development, a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and a Diploma in Range Management, in addition to several professional training courses completed in Kenya and abroad.

He also highlighted his public-service career, during which he rose to become Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of a public institution focused on social and economic development, serving two consecutive terms as accounting officer.

Ewaso Ng’iro North Development Authority (ENNDA) was established on 1st December 1989 through the Ewaso Ng’iro North River Basin Development Authority Act CAP 448 of the Laws of Kenya.

The Authority’s mandate is to plan, co-ordinate and implement development projects and programmes, in the Ewaso Ng’iro North basin and catchment areas.

ENNDA is amongst 6 basin development authorities namely; Lake Basin Development Authority, Kerio Valley Development Authority, Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority, Coast Development Authority and Ewaso Ng’iro South Development Authority

His contributions to national development earned him the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW), a national honour conferred by the President of Kenya during the country’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations.

Describing himself as a son of Wajir Township, Omar said growing up in the county’s diverse social environment gave him a deep appreciation of its multicultural heritage and the need for inclusive leadership.

He pledged to foster unity among communities and ensure equitable distribution of development resources across all parts of Wajir County.

“I do not come to you with promises of perfection. I come to you with a track record, with dedication, and with a heart full of hope and service,” he said, appealing for prayers, support and guidance ahead of the 2027 elections.
