Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Washes Ashore in Puntland

Preliminary observations suggest similarities to the UK-manufactured Banshee target drone used in air-defense training and weapons testing exercises.

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has reportedly washed ashore along the coast of Hafun in Somalia’s Bari region, after being discovered by local fishermen, raising questions about its origin and intended use.

Residents who first spotted the object said the aircraft appeared largely intact and resembled a military-style drone.

Preliminary observations suggest similarities to the UK-manufactured Banshee target drone, which is commonly used in air-defense training and weapons testing exercises.

Photos circulating on social media show the unmanned aircraft partially beached along the shoreline, drawing curiosity from locals. However, authorities have yet to officially verify the model, ownership, or how it ended up in Somali waters.

The autonous Puntland state of Somalia has not released a formal statement regarding the incident.

Hassan Abdi, a security analyst noted that such target drones are typically used by military forces during training exercises and may travel long distances if they lose control or exhaust fuel.

“The discovery has prompted speculation about whether the UAV originated from a regional military exercise or drifted after malfunctioning at sea,” he said.

He called on authorities to examine the device to determine its origin and assess any potential security implications.
