NDMA Disburses Sh870 Million to Support Drought-Hit Households

Share:

The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has disbursed Sh870.38 million in cash transfers to support households facing acute food shortages in eight counties severely affected by successive dry seasons.

NDMA Chief Executive Officer Hared Adan said the prolonged drought continues to pose a serious threat to household food security, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, leaving many families unable to meet their basic needs.

The funds have been released under the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP) and will benefit 132,780 vulnerable households in Mandera, Marsabit, Turkana, Wajir, Samburu, Tana River, Garissa, and Isiolo counties.

According to NDMA, the cash transfers are intended to help affected families purchase food and essential supplies as drought conditions persist in the regions. Payments will be made through Equity Bank and Kenya Commercial Bank branches, as well as authorised agents operating within the affected counties.

Mr Adan urged beneficiaries to collect their funds promptly and assured them that mechanisms had been put in place to ensure smooth disbursement. He added that the programme remains a critical safety net for communities repeatedly impacted by climate shocks.

Beneficiaries experiencing challenges accessing the funds have been advised to seek assistance from their nearest bank branch, NDMA county office, or HSNP sub-county office to resolve any issues and ensure they receive their payments without delay.

The government has reiterated its commitment to supporting vulnerable populations through social protection programmes as part of broader efforts to mitigate the impact of drought and enhance resilience in affected regions.
