How Wajir Became Northern Kenya’s Key Trade Gateway to Somalia and Ethiopia

Wajir is gaining national attention ahead of Madaraka Day 2026 as cross-border trade with Somalia and Ethiopia boosts livestock, transport and regional commerce in northern Kenya.

Wajir will host the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations in 2026, with attention increasingly turning to the town’s strategic role in cross-border trade linking Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.

For decades, Wajir has served as a commercial gateway for livestock, food commodities, textiles and household goods moving across the Horn of Africa. Traders from neighbouring countries regularly pass through the town, sustaining businesses and livelihoods across northern Kenya.

Livestock trade remains central to the local economy, with camels, cattle, goats and sheep transported through regional markets connecting pastoralist communities beyond national borders.

Local traders say ongoing infrastructure improvements ahead of Madaraka Day could further strengthen Wajir’s position as a regional business and transport hub.

“This town depends on movement and trade,” said businessman Mohamed Abdi. “People from across the region come here to buy, sell and connect markets.”

Residents hope the national celebrations will shine a spotlight on Wajir’s economic importance and changing role within East Africa’s growing cross-border economy.
