Stakeholders and members of the public in Garissa are set to participate in the second public consultation on the proposed upgrading of Garissa Level 5 Teaching and Referral Hospital to a Level 6 Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The consultation meeting, convened by the State Department for Medical Services, will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Government Guest House in Garissa.
Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital said in a statement to newsrooms, “the meeting is part of the public consultation process for the proposed upgrading of the facility.”
The hospital said, the meeting will provide stakeholders and other interested parties with an opportunity to receive information about the proposed upgrade and submit their views, comments and recommendations.
“The consultation is being undertaken pursuant to Regulation 17 of the Environmental Management and Coordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, as part of the assessment and public participation process,” read part of the public information dispatch.
It urged stakeholders to attend and actively participate, saying their contributions will help ensure an inclusive and meaningful public consultation process.
The proposed elevation of the Garissa facility to Level 6 status would mark a major step in the development of specialised healthcare, teaching and referral services in the region.
The Thursday meeting will be the second public participation session on the proposed upgrade, giving residents, health-sector stakeholders and other interested parties another opportunity to make their views known before the process advances.
