Journalist and communications professional Yunis Dekow Hussein has been recommended to pursue the Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat for Sala Ward in Bura Constituency, Tana River County, following a political viability assessment by a committee established to evaluate his prospects ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Dekow 2027 Viability Assessment Committee (DVAC), constituted to examine the feasibility of a potential candidacy, assessed the political environment, community dynamics, voter priorities, campaign requirements and the opportunities and challenges associated with the proposed bid.
Following the assessment, the committee recommended that Dekow proceed with preparations to contest the Sala Ward MCA seat.
The committee was chaired by Dr. Abdullahi Aden, with Mohamed Gabbow serving as secretary. Its membership brought together individuals with responsibilities spanning political strategy, community engagement, media and public relations, finance and resource mobilisation, research and policy development.
The Political Strategy and Advisory Team, comprising Hassan Dekow and Nimah Abdi, was tasked with analysing the political landscape, prospective competitors, potential alliances and campaign messaging.
Caydurus Abdirahman led the Community Engagement and Outreach Team, which was responsible for gathering grassroots views and assessing support among key constituencies, including young people and women.
Dr. Abdullahi said the committee also examined the financial requirements of a potential campaign and the prospects for resource mobilisation.
The Research and Policy Development Team was tasked with identifying voter priorities, governance concerns and policy issues that could form the foundation of a campaign platform.
According to the committee’s terms of reference, the assessment sought to establish whether Dekow had a realistic basis for mounting a competitive MCA campaign while identifying the political, financial and organisational requirements that would be necessary for a successful bid.
The committee recommended the development of a comprehensive stakeholder engagement plan, a strategic campaign blueprint, a financial feasibility framework and a policy agenda anchored on issues raised by Sala Ward residents.
A decade in journalism and public communication
Dekow’s potential political entry comes after more than a decade working in journalism, media and strategic communications across Kenya and the wider Horn of Africa.
Born on September 19, 1996, and raised in Garissa, Dekow developed an interest in storytelling at an early age. As a high school student, he began commentating on English Premier League matches for a local radio station, an experience that marked the beginning of his career in media.
He later pursued formal training in Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nairobi, building a professional career that has taken him across radio, television, newspapers and digital media.
His journalism has frequently focused on politics, governance, development and the experiences of marginalised communities.
A personal experience also shaped his approach to public-interest journalism. His struggle to obtain a national identity card as a Kenyan Somali exposed him to bureaucratic and discriminatory challenges experienced by members of his community. The experience strengthened his interest in good governance, inclusion and advocacy for communities that have historically faced barriers in accessing public services and opportunities.
Over the course of his career, Dekow has built a professional footprint extending beyond Kenya.
He served as Broadcast and Digital Editorial Director at Dalsan Media Group in Mogadishu and as Chief Content Officer at CBA TV in Somaliland. He also worked as a Public Press Information Officer for the African Union and United Nations in Somalia, gaining experience in public information, regional affairs and communications in a complex political environment.
In Kenya, he currently serves as Director of Strategy and Innovation at Kulan Post, where he has focused on youth engagement and encouraging young people to participate constructively in political and civic affairs.
He is also Treasurer of the Crime Journalists Association of Kenya and Secretary General of Northern Kenya Media Practitioners, positions through which he has been involved in advocacy for ethical journalism and the welfare of media practitioners.
Dekow additionally contributes to the Eastleigh Voice Newspaper, writing on issues affecting Nairobi’s diverse communities.
His experience also extends into entrepreneurship. He founded Royal Halann, a Nairobi-based media strategy company, through which he has continued to work in communications and media strategy.
Across these roles, Dekow has worked as a journalist, editor, photographer and multimedia producer, with experience in investigative journalism, news gathering, public communication and corporate content production.
From media to elective politics
The committee’s assessment identifies Dekow’s professional background in journalism and communications as one of the potential strengths of his proposed campaign.
His years covering political, governance and development issues in Northern and Eastern Kenya have exposed him to public debates and community concerns that could inform his transition from media and communications into elective politics.
His advocacy for youth participation has also been a recurring feature of his public work. Dekow has urged young Kenyans to become solution-oriented participants in politics and to reject divisive rhetoric.
A move into elective politics would therefore put his experience in public communication, community engagement and advocacy to a direct political test.
However, the viability committee’s recommendation does not constitute a formal campaign launch. Instead, it provides a basis for moving from consideration of a potential candidacy to structured preparations.
The committee has recommended that the next phase involve consultations with Sala Ward residents, community leaders, opinion shapers and other stakeholders before any formal campaign is launched.
The consultations are expected to help determine the issues that would form the centre of a possible campaign platform and assess the level of grassroots support for Dekow’s candidature.
2027 political contest
The 2027 General Election is expected to generate heightened political activity across Tana River County as aspirants position themselves for ward, parliamentary and gubernatorial contests.
For Sala Ward, Dekow’s potential entry would bring a candidate with an extensive media and communications background into the local political arena.
The viability assessment provides the framework for moving from a possible political bid to organised preparations for an MCA campaign, subject to Dekow’s decision to accept the recommendation.
If he proceeds, the committee is expected to transition into a formal campaign structure, with its proposed work focusing on stakeholder engagement, campaign strategy, financing, research and policy development.
For Dekow, the possible candidacy represents a significant shift from reporting on politics and governance to seeking a direct mandate from voters.
After more than a decade of working behind the microphone, camera and newsroom desk, the proposed Sala Ward MCA bid would place his own leadership record, ideas and connection with the community at the centre of the political conversation.
