Skyward Airlines launched scheduled direct flights between Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and Garissa on Tuesday. It is aimed at expanding domestic network into North Eastern Kenya and providing a faster alternative to the long road journey.
The new route operates four times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays—with departures from Wilson Airport at 11:00 a.m. and arrivals in Garissa at approximately 11:50 a.m.
Fares start from about Sh9,000, offering travellers a convenient option compared with the roughly six-hour drive between the capital and the regional commercial centre.
The launch follows the Sh710 million modernisation and reopening of Garissa Airport, which has improved infrastructure and attracted additional airline services.
Skyward Airlines Chief Executive Officer Diana Nyambura described the route as part of the carrier’s efforts to close connectivity gaps and support economic activity across Kenya.
The airline noted that passengers flying via Wilson Airport can also connect to its broader domestic and regional network, including destinations such as Mombasa, Eldoret, Lodwar, Lamu, Malindi, Ukunda/Diani, Kisumu, Migori, Kitale and Dar es Salaam.
Garissa County leaders, including Governor Nathif Jama, have welcomed the service, saying it will enhance trade, investment, tourism and movement of people and goods while strengthening the county’s role as a key economic hub in northern Kenya.
The inaugural operations also mark a milestone for the Kenyan-owned airline, which has highlighted the Nairobi–Garissa service as its 13th route in its 13th year of connecting communities.
Bookings are available through Skyward Airlines’ website, offices at Wilson Airport, and a local booking point in Garissa. The service is expected to benefit business travellers, traders, government officials, tourists and residents seeking quicker and more reliable links to the capital and beyond.
