Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital has strengthened access to specialized orthopedic and trauma care and expanded specialist medical services for patients across North Eastern Kenya.

Dr. Abdullahi Ali Issack, the Head of the Orthopedic Surgery Department, leads a multidisciplinary orthopedic team that includes Dr. Muhammad Ahmed Abdulla and Dr. Adhan Dahir Mohamed.

The department provides specialized diagnosis, treatment and surgical management of bone, joint and musculoskeletal conditions at the county’s premier referral facility.

The division manages a broad range of orthopedic conditions, including fractures resulting from road traffic accidents and other trauma, joint disorders, sports injuries and musculoskeletal diseases, helping reduce the need for patients to seek treatment in distant referral hospitals.

Dr. Abdullahi Ali Issack said the continued growth of specialist departments reflects GCTRH’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare closer to home.

He said Regional Referral hospital has expanded its specialist workforce and now operates more than a dozen medical departments supported by over 39 specialists, modern operating theatres and diagnostic services.

“The strengthening of orthopedic services comes as the hospital undergoes key transformation through infrastructure upgrades, modernization of patient services and increased investment in specialized healthcare,” said Dr. Ali.

These improvements are part of broader efforts to position Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital as a regional centre of excellence serving residents of Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Tana River, Isiolo, Lamu and neighbouring areas.

The government has announced plans to upgrade Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital into a Level 6 National Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The move will enhance specialist services such as orthopedic surgery and reduce referrals to hospitals outside the region.
