Residents of Afwein in Garissa County are set to benefit from improved healthcare services following the official elevation of Afwein Health Centre to a Level 3C health facility, a move that will allow the hospital to admit up to 30 inpatients for the first time.
The upgrade was announced on Monday during a visit by Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, who presented the facility with its official operating certificate authorizing expanded inpatient services.
The promotion marks a vital milestone for the remote health centre, strengthening its capacity to provide comprehensive medical care closer to local communities and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to access inpatient treatment.
During the visit, Duale inspected the hospital’s refurbished maternity wing and praised improvements in maternal healthcare services.
He said increased community awareness campaigns had encouraged more women to seek skilled delivery services, contributing to the facility recording no maternal deaths over the past six months.
The Cabinet Secretary described the achievement as evidence that continued investment in primary healthcare and maternal health services is delivering positive results.
CS Duale also assessed the ongoing national identity card registration exercise in the area. He urged eligible residents to obtain their identification documents, saying the government’s decision to abolish the vetting requirement had made the registration process more accessible and would enable more citizens to access public services.
He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the national government and the Garissa County government to accelerate development projects and improve service delivery across the county.
Mr. Mohammed Hussein, Umulkheir Harun, Members of the Garissa County Assembly led by Hassan Geley, and other national and local leaders attended the event.
